SAFETY IN SCHOOLS...

it's an investigative report you'll see this week on News-3.
We're digging into police numbers we've obtained----
and looking at every call and arrest at the four Madison High Schools.
We're also going into each of the schools; to learn what's working and check out the atmosphere, first-hand.
Monday; our focus is on East High.
Parents may be surprised by some of the trends.. but those we talked with at the school say;
they've been working hard to make a change there.

Traditionally; East has the most police calls and arrests. Not this current school year!
East is seeing arrests fall from 74 total last year; to just 17, with about 3-months to go in the 2005-2006 school year.
Fights, battery, disturbances: it's all down by one-third.
And at the same pace East is decreasing; Memorial High is increasing--- with already more arrests than the other three schools combined.

Students, staff, security; even parents say it's a new team atmosphere at East.
Principal Alan Harris is in his first year there and is bringing some strict rules which everyone says are tough, but fair.

We'll check out LaFollette on Tuesday, Memorial is Wednesday, and West High on Thursday.

Let us know if you have any comments or questions!
